Frequently Asked Questions

When should I spay or neuter my pet?

Generally, we like to wait until your pet is around 6 months of age. However, we may recommend waiting longer depending on the breed of the dog or for other health reasons. This is a great discussion to have at your initial puppy visit!

Do you offer breeding consultations and fertility testing?

Yes, we offer breeding consultations and services. Depending on your intentions, this may include OFA hip and elbow testing, hormonal testing in females, sperm viability in males, and other breed-specific requests. We offer side-by-side artificial insemination and surgical implantation, with the hope of soon offering transcervical insemination. At this time, we do not offer sperm collection and shipping or freezing, as well as egg collection and freezing.

What prenatal care is needed for pregnant pets?

There is a lot to consider when deciding to have a litter. We welcome discussions about planning a good, healthy pregnancy for your pet. This may include nutritional recommendations or even deworming protocols.

What are the risks of breeding my pet?

The primary risk is that your pet may be unable to deliver naturally, which could make a cesarean section necessary. Also, if the mother is unable to nurse or care for their babies, the puppies or kittens will need round-the-clock care from you. We recommend being prepared for these situations if they were to arise.

What kind of veterinary care do newborn puppies or kittens need?

A clean, warm, quiet, and stress-free environment is needed. Normally, mom takes care of her litter, but if anything seems off, please do not hesitate to call us. We can provide guidance on neonatal care if needed.

When should puppies or kittens have their first check-up and vaccinations?

Normally, around 6–8 weeks of age to receive their initial wellness exam and vaccinations. This is also a great time to have fecal analysis performed and discuss their vaccine schedule based on their intended lifestyle and exposure risk, as well as discuss preventative options.
